Backend Engineer, Control Plane

Tailscale is seeking a full-time Software Engineer to join the Control Plane Team. You will develop the Tailscale product, contributing to open source client code and backend services, and take ownership of the product lifecycle from code to strategic decisions. You will work with UX/UI designers and product managers to shape features.

• Design, build, test, and document core software components.
• Develop features in the control plane, relay infrastructure, and identity integrations.
• Own running services by building for observability, participating in incident response, and handling customer support escalations.
• Analyze and improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of system resources.
• Bring a security-first mindset to design and implementation.

• Experience with distributed systems.
• Experience with the Go programming language.
• Experience with one or more SQL databases.
• Familiarity with networking (IP addressing, routing, etc.).
• Ability to give and process constructive feedback and work independently.
• Flexibility to adjust to a dynamic startup environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Base salary range: $218,420—$302,840 CAD. The package includes base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits. Benefits include health, vision, dental coverage, employer-funded retirement contributions (dollar-for-dollar match up to 0.75% of eligible compensation), $1500 USD annual professional development budget, flexible paid time off, home office setup (laptop, $500 USD workstation allowance, monthly internet reimbursement), and paid parental leave (20 weeks for birthing parents, 16 weeks for non-birthing parents).
