About the job

For over 20 years, Smartsheet has helped people and teams achieve–well, anything. From seamless work management to smart, scalable solutions, we’ve always worked with flow. We’re building tools that empower teams to automate the manual, uncover insights, and scale smarter. But more than that, we’re creating space– space to think big, take action, and unlock the kind of work that truly matters. Because when challenge meets purpose, and passion turns into progress, that’s magic at work, and it’s what we show up for everyday.

Smartsheet is seeking a talented Corporate and Employment Counsel to join its collaborative legal team. We are looking for a highly capable and motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills to assist us in supporting the People function, along with the Go-to-Market and Procurement functions. This role will work across functions to help the company mitigate potential risks during the employee lifecycle and leverage counseling skills to advise key leaders at a fast-paced cloud software organization.

This position reports to a Director of Legal and is remote.

You Will:

  • Work with the global Legal and People teams on a wide variety of employment law matters.
  • Act as a versatile legal resource, providing support on general corporate matters, commercial contracts, or other legal projects outside of the employment niche as business needs evolve.
  • Provide nuanced, actionable employment counsel and legal advice to the People     team and other departments with customer-facing responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with Legal team members across multiple domestic and international office locations, and various company stakeholders to gather information and develop employment policies with the company’s broader legal strategy in mind.
  • Manage outside counsel, including guidance, staffing, case management, and budget–including working closely with outside counsel in Costa Rica and assisting with regular employee relations issues.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of standard forms of agreement, alternate language playbooks, and internal resource documents pertaining to employment and other legal practice areas.
  • Manage a portfolio of employment matters that may include unemployment claims, administrative audits, agency charge, and workers compensation claims.
  • Assist in delivering legal training and guidance to management on legal issues, best practices, and company policies.
  • Lead and conduct sensitive internal investigations with empathy, objectivity, and discretion, effectively managing stakeholders with varying perspectives.
  • Support general business operations and complete special projects as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned

You Have:

  • 3+ years of relevant legal practice (preferably a mix of top-tier law employment firm experience).
  • Substantive experience litigating a wide variety of employment matters, including complex litigation, administrative and agency matters.
  • Proven ability to translate and simplify complex legal concepts for non-legal business partners.
  • Ability to analyze problems and recommend practical solutions that balance legal and business risks.
  • Ability to maintain composure and influence in high-pressure or contentious situations.
  • Skilled at developing strong partnerships with other members of the Legal team as well as other business stakeholders.
  • Willingness to assist other members of the Legal team as opportunities arise.
  • Strong team and service-oriented mentality.
  • Persistent attention to detail.
  • Able to operate successfully in a fast-paced environment that places a high premium on excellence, execution, and teamwork.
  • JD from an accredited law school and an active member of a state bar.
