Manager, Software Engineering (Developer Environments)

Affirm is a fintech company reinventing credit with transparent, no-fee buy-now-pay-later products. The Developer Productivity org supports 800+ engineers, owning the space from developer laptops to production, including ephemeral dev environments, CI/CD, test automation, dependency management, and release engineering. The Developer Environments team builds and operates fast, stable ephemeral development environments used in both development and CI workflows.

• Define and drive the vision for Developer Environments and inner-loop developer productivity.
• Set technical strategy on a year-long horizon tied to business-impacting projects.
• Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.
• Partner with engineering leadership and stakeholders to align priorities with product, platform, and reliability goals.
• Own the design, scalability, reliability, and usability of ephemeral developer environment systems.
• Improve provisioning, stability, and teardown workflows to enhance developer velocity and reliability.
• Drive measurable improvements to the developer journey (e.g., startup time, success rate, performance, debuggability, resource utilization).
• Implement monitoring, alerting, incident response, and operational playbooks to minimize downtime.
• Collaborate with CI/CD and Test Platform partners to tighten feedback loops.
• Ensure smooth adoption of Developer Environments tooling and best practices across engineering.

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years of engineering management (or equivalent people leadership).
• Proven experience leading infrastructure, platform engineering, developer productivity, or adjacent teams.
• Strong backend/infrastructure background (Python or Kotlin preferred) and ability to guide architecture.
• Experience building and operating cloud-native systems (AWS, Kubernetes) and using infrastructure-as-code.
• Hands-on familiarity with containerized environments (Docker/Kubernetes) and CI/CD systems (e.g., Buildkite, Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
• Track record of operating services with a high reliability bar (monitoring, on-call, incident response, postmortems).
• Strong communication and leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring and growing teams.
• Comfort balancing trade-offs between build vs. buy, speed vs. safety, and developer experience vs. operational constraints.
• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

• Prior experience building or managing ephemeral or remote development environments.
• Experience optimizing orchestration and startup times and improving developer feedback loops.
• Background in test automation, build engineering, or developer tooling.
• Familiarity with Terraform/Helm or similar infrastructure tooling.

USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) per year: $230,000 - $290,000. USA base pay range (all other U.S. states) per year: $204,000 - $264,000. Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents.

Affirm is a remote-first company; most roles are remote and can be performed almost anywhere within the country of employment. Proximal roles may occasionally require work from an assigned Affirm office.
