About the job

About Anthropic

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, focused on creating reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Life Sciences team is building a research group to make fundamental biological discoveries using AI.

About the Role

We are seeking a Research Scientist to join the Life Sciences team. This role combines computational biology expertise with frontier AI capabilities. As one of the first computational members, you will work at the intersection of computational and experimental biology, driving discoveries from large-scale computational analysis to experimental validation. You will have substantial access to Claude and help establish how computational biology operates at Anthropic.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, run, and maintain analysis pipelines for sequence analysis, structural bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and high-throughput functional screens.
  • Partner with experimental biologists to design experiments and turn results around quickly.
  • Use literature and biological knowledge bases to generate hypotheses.
  • Stand up and maintain computational infrastructure: data ingestion, workflow orchestration, internal databases, and interfaces for researchers and AI agents.
  • Use Claude and internal agent frameworks heavily, feeding learnings back to model-improvement and product teams.
  • Pick up analyses across projects as priorities shift.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, biophysics, machine learning, computer science, or related field, or equivalent industry research experience.
  • Track record of leading computational biology research end to end.
  • Breadth across multiple areas of computational biology.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages for scientific computing, comfortable with large datasets in Linux and cloud compute environments.
  • Ability to scope ambiguous biological questions and produce actionable results.
  • Clear communication to biologists and ML researchers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comfort with ambiguity and rapidly evolving research environments.
  • Results-oriented with bias for flexibility and impact.
  • Hands-on experimental biology experience or designing experiments with experimentalists.
  • Experience building tools, pipelines, or agentic systems on LLMs, or training models on biological sequence data.
  • Deep expertise in one or two areas of computational biology (e.g., structural biology, metagenomics, single-cell genomics, protein design).

Compensation

Annual salary range: $300,000—$320,000 USD.

Benefits

Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space.
