About the Role

The Senior Compensation Manager is a core member of Gusto's People team, responsible for building and scaling compensation programs. This role operates at the intersection of data, policy, and people, using a systems-first, AI-native mindset to improve decision quality, ensure compliance, and reduce manual analysis. The role partners with HR Business Partners, Finance, Legal, and business leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and communicate compensation programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Partner with stakeholders to translate compensation philosophy into actionable programs.
  • Lead annual compensation cycles (merit, equity refresh, benchmarking) end-to-end.
  • Perform market analyses using survey data (e.g., Radford/Aon, Mercer, Pave) to recommend pay ranges and job levels.
  • Use AI tools and automation to accelerate analysis and reduce planning load.
  • Design and maintain scalable compensation workflows and tooling.
  • Build compensation dashboards and data visualizations for leadership insight.
  • Craft competitive offers and build playbooks for recruiters and HRBPs.
  • Ensure compliance with pay regulations, including pay transparency laws and FLSA.
  • Partner with People Operations to optimize HRIS and compensation tools.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in Compensation, Total Rewards, People Operations, or related analytical function.
  • AI fluency: hands-on experience using AI tools or automation.
  • Experience running compensation cycles and building scalable programs.
  • Survey benchmarking fluency with Radford/Aon, Mercer, Pave, or comparable tools.
  • Systems-first orientation: building durable workflows and automating reports.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills (Excel, Google Sheets) and data modeling.
  • Knowledge of compensation and employment law (FLSA, pay transparency, pay equity).
  • Clear communicator who can translate complex pay data for executives.
  • Comfort operating at multiple altitudes, from hands-on analysis to advising leadership.
  • Background in Mathematics, Finance, Statistics, Economics, or related field preferred.

Compensation

Cash compensation: $154,045 - $189,989/year in Denver; $181,000 - $223,573/year for New York/San Francisco. Final offers vary by location, experience, and expertise.

Work Location

Hybrid - San Francisco, CA. Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York City are expected to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. The San Francisco office expectations encompass the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
