Senior Java Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch team, focusing on shared platform functionalities that are easy to use, performant, maintainable, and secure. The team owns common functionality such as services, settings, and scripting, and makes Elasticsearch extensible through plugins or the Painless scripting language. The team also provides logging and telemetry, and owns orchestration of Elasticsearch in serverless, CI/CD workflows, and delivery to customers across serverless, cloud, and on-premise.

• Contribute to large, impactful projects that evolve the core infrastructure underpinning Elasticsearch.
• Make Elasticsearch developers more productive by identifying automation opportunities and integrating agentic apps into development workflows.
• Design and implement new horizontally-scalable features and APIs in Elasticsearch.
• Solve difficult issues, including performance or concurrency issues, and propose solutions.
• Improve operation and observability of Elasticsearch cloud systems.
• Collaborate in the open with the ES team, Elastic users, and other open source projects.
• Support support engineers with harder problems and own operational investigations end-to-end.

• Experience crafting APIs and reasoning through tradeoffs.
• Proficient in algorithms and data structures.
• Strong skills in core Java, including the standard library, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
• Experience with low-level Java such as concurrency, parallelism, classloaders.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems (Buildkite, Argo CD, GitOps).
• Experience leading large-scale projects across engineering teams.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams, work autonomously, and drive decisions in a distributed team.

• Knowledge of JDK internals: modules, Java memory model, garbage collection, database load, caching.
• Experience with observability and telemetry, particularly OpenTelemetry.
• Knowledge of Go, containers, and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of Java build tools (Gradle, Maven), with preference for Gradle.
• Experience in a platform team or developer productivity team.

Base salary only, no variable component. Typical starting salary range: 307,800 zł—486,900 zł PLN.
