About the job

About the Role

The Observability Streams team at Elastic is building Elastic's unified data pipeline, connecting data sources to destinations with full control over processing and routing. The Streams Backend team owns the backend services powering this pipeline, including Logstash, the open-source streaming ETL tool, and contributes to the OpenTelemetry Collector.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new features for Logstash and its plugins in Java and JRuby.
  • Design, build, and operate core backend services for the Streams program in Golang.
  • Add features and contribute to the OpenTelemetry Collector in Golang.
  • Solve distributed systems problems at scale.
  • Maintain and improve existing code and dependencies, ensuring automated test coverage.
  • Engage with public GitHub repositories and community forums.
  • Provide pull request reviews and guidance to peers.
  • Collaborate with other teams to drive product goals.
  • Work with support to help customers, including participating in an on-call rotation.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work in a remote-first, highly distributed environment with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
  • Expertise in at least one of Java, Golang, or Ruby, with willingness to learn the others.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with observability tools and concepts (tracing, metrics, logging), especially OpenTelemetry.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • JRuby development.
  • Open source software development.
  • Knowledge of stream processing platforms (e.g., Kafka), databases (e.g., Postgres or MySQL), and network technologies (e.g., TCP, UDP, HTTP).
  • Exposure to the Elastic stack.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is in the form of base salary; no variable component. Typical starting salary range: €61,100—€96,600 EUR.
