Senior Software Engineer - Storage Engine - Elasticsearch

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Storage Engine team. This globally distributed, fully remote team develops core storage and query technologies for observability workloads, including improving storage efficiency, advancing ES|QL query processing and performance, and optimizing data layouts for object storage. The role involves designing, implementing, and optimizing Elasticsearch's core storage and query engine.

• Lead the architectural evolution of core storage engine components, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks in indexing layouts, serialization formats, and resource utilization.
• Lead cross-organizational initiatives for observability solutions.
• Work with a globally distributed team on logs and metrics capabilities.
• Drive operational improvements and best practices.
• Serve as an SME across Elasticsearch, mentoring the engineering organization.
• Triage and review issues and pull requests.
• Write idiomatic modern Java.

• Collaborate across functions, work autonomously in a distributed team.
• Use AI to accelerate development with a prompt-engineering mindset, leveraging AI agents effectively.
• Implement novel techniques for indexing/storing/querying time-series or logs data.
• Experience with data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Prometheus.
• Strong core Java skills with concurrency primitives.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Bonus: building with Elasticsearch, open source experience, data storage technology, cross-functional initiatives, database/search/OS/cloud development.

The typical starting salary range for this role is €61,100—€96,600 EUR. Compensation is base salary only, no variable component.
