Senior Staff Engineer

Gusto's mission is to grow the small business economy by handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. The company has offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York.

As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on Expansion Experiences, you will own outcomes across the full expansion funnel, from customer need to adoption. You will shape technical approach and architecture, partner with Product, Design, and Data Science, and make scoping calls to ship simple versions that prove or disprove ideas.

• Own outcomes across the full expansion funnel.
• Shape technical approach and architecture for recommendations and conversion journeys.
• Make sharp scoping calls under time constraints.
• Design experiments and use ambiguous data to decide what to scale.
• Partner independently with Product, Design, and Data Science.
• Raise the engineering bar through technical direction, code review, and mentoring.

• 10+ years of software development experience, including full-stack, customer-facing products at scale.
• Product-minded, starting from customer problems and metrics.
• Experience in growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused contexts (onboarding, upsell, personalization, recommendations).
• Ability to move quickly and execute with high quality.
• Experience owning multi-quarter initiatives end to end.
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and leading through influence.
• Experience with large-scale refactors, performance, and reliability.
• Track record of mentoring engineers and delegating scoped work.
• Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development.
• Ability to build well-structured, maintainable code.
• Strong communication across teams and stakeholders.

• Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript.

Cash compensation is targeted at $191,000–$240,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $225,000–$275,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).

This role is hybrid. Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York are expected to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. Travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required.
