Senior Staff Software Engineer, iOS Platform

Gusto is looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to help guide mobile efforts, focusing on developing the foundation upon which mobile apps are built. You will take ownership of scaling shared services while keeping up with the latest in the iOS world, working closely with teams across Product, Identity, Security, System Design, and Infrastructure.

• Architect, build, test, and refine Gusto's iOS app, along with supporting embedded mobile web views.
• Utilize AI agents as a multiplier to deliver high-quality output quickly.
• Identify and advocate for best practices, architecture, and process.
• Enhance and maintain iOS mobile infrastructure, including build pipelines, testing automation, and release process.
• Build and scale foundational services such as push notification systems, accessibility, and localization features.
• Develop, iterate, and improve product features that integrate core business functions, work tools, value-added services, and financial products.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and partner teams to identify pain points, brainstorm solutions, and launch solutions.

• Minimum of 10 years of experience in Swift and iOS software engineering, with at least 12 years in mobile software engineering overall.
• Excellent communication skills and a knack for building strong cross-functional partnerships.
• Self-driven mindset with the ability to tackle greenfield projects.
• Proficiency in iOS testing frameworks and solid understanding of best practices.
• Experience in developing platform components and common features that enhance scalability, consistency, performance, and maintainability.
• Strong critical thinking abilities and keen attention to detail.
• Willingness to learn continuously and passion for mentoring others.

• Experience delivering high-quality code across a diverse tech stack.
• Experience with analytics and monitoring tools.
• Experience with mobile infrastructure, e.g., CI/CD, automated testing environments, and release orchestration.
• Strong knowledge of GraphQL.
• Experience working at scale on apps that span multiple teams and feature areas.

Cash compensation is targeted at $189,000–$236,000 per year in Denver and most remote locations, and $223,000–$278,000 per year in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York. Stock equity is offered in addition. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
