Senior Systems Engineer

Cloudflare is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join the Emerging Technology and Incubation (ETI) department, working on the Basin platform. Basin became generally available during Birthday Week 2026. The role focuses on extending engineering teams working on Basin Catalog and Basin SQL. Basin Catalog manages Iceberg table metadata and runs ongoing table maintenance such as compaction. Basin SQL is Cloudflare's in-house distributed SQL engine built to run petabyte-scale queries over data stored in R2.

• Shape the future of industry-leading storage and database services.
• Own code from inception to release, delivering solutions at all layers of the software stack.
• Architect globally distributed data consistency models, optimize storage engine performance, and design novel APIs for data-centric products.
• Work with a variety of languages and technologies including JavaScript, TypeScript, Rust, and C++.

• Minimum 5 years of experience working with distributed systems.
• Experience building and managing high volume software applications.
• Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented or functional design.
• Knowledge of at least one modern strongly-typed programming language: primarily Rust, TypeScript, and Go.
• Experience debugging, optimizing, and identifying failure modes in a large-scale distributed system.

• Experience building and managing a large scale data storage platform.
• Experience working in low-latency real time environments such as game streaming, game engine architecture, high frequency trading, payment systems.
• Experience working in a non-garbage collected language such as Rust or C++.
• Experience writing JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Deep Linux / UNIX systems knowledge.

Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location. For Bay Area based hires: estimated annual salary of $194,000 - $266,000. For New York City, New Jersey, Washington, Washington DC, and California (excluding Bay Area) based hires: estimated annual salary of $185,000 - $254,000. This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare's equity plan.
