About the Role

As a Staff Engineer on the Developer Productivity - AI Developer Tools team, you will architect the AI platform that accelerates engineering across Gusto, building a secure, context-aware, AI-native development lifecycle. You will eliminate developer friction through AI tools, multi-agent systems, and intelligent automation.

About the Team

The AI Developer Tools team is a specialized team within Developer Productivity, providing every builder with a suite of superpowers tools that understand the codebase and absorb operational toil.

Responsibilities

  • Architect AI core infrastructure: design, scale, and maintain internal platforms and APIs integrating LLMs into the developer workflow, focusing on autonomous agents, RAG, and context delivery.
  • Drive technical leadership: establish best practices for AI, including evals, guardrails, and latency/token optimization.
  • Collaborate with product engineering, Infrastructure, and Security teams to ensure scalable, compliant, and secure AI tooling.
  • Optimize feedback loops and maintain enterprise reliability with production-grade rigor.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of systems expertise with production-grade distributed software.
  • Production AI experience with prompt engineering, fine-tuning, RAG, and multi-agent workflows.
  • Developer-first mindset and passion for developer experience.
  • Strategic execution with focus on data privacy, security, cost, and reliability.
  • Exceptional communication and ability to work across teams.

Compensation

Cash compensation targeted at $180,000-$200,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $220,000-$245,000/yr for San Francisco, New York & Seattle. Stock equity is additional.
