Software Engineer

Twilio is seeking a Software Engineer (L3) to join the Email Platform team within Twilio SendGrid. This role is critical to building and operating highly available, massive-scale distributed systems that process over 12 billion emails during peak events. As an L3 engineer, you will drive execution within core services, modernize backend systems, optimize Go-based microservices, and contribute to the design and reliability of a dual-cloud infrastructure spanning AWS and Azure.

• Architect and ship reliable, high-velocity features handling critical traffic with low end-to-end latency.
• Drive rigorous code reviews and maintainable patterns in the Go codebase, ensuring high testing standards.
• Manage and enhance cloud configurations across AWS and Azure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
• Ensure deep observability coverage by standardizing metrics, alerts, and distributed tracing across core data pipelines.
• Advocate for a clean architectural foundation, identifying technical debt, bottlenecks, and single points of failure.
• Mentor junior engineers, lead technical sprint planning, and share expertise across distributed teams.

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating resilient backend services at scale.
• Practical experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (such as Claude Code).
• Strong production experience writing clean, idiomatic, and highly concurrent Go, Java, or Python.
• Experience deploying and managing production workloads in AWS (EC2, S3, Aurora, DynamoDB) and Azure (Virtual Machines, Blob Storage, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB).
• Proficiency with Terraform for infrastructure automation.
• Strong understanding of distributed datastores, caching layers, and asynchronous event streaming (e.g., Kafka).
• Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals and building self-healing cloud architectures.

• Experience with containerized infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with database migration pathways (e.g., to AWS Aurora).
• Experience implementing OpenTelemetry or distributed tracing.
• Experience with network topology, proxy layers, or mail transfer agent (MTA) protocols.

Estimated pay ranges (based on location): $138,700 - $173,400 (CO, HI, IL, MD, MA, MN, VT, DC); $146,800 - $183,600 (NY, NJ, WA, CA outside SF Bay); $163,100 - $203,900 (SF Bay Area). This role may be eligible for Twilio's equity plan and corporate bonus plan.
