About the role

Twilio is seeking a Sr AI Architect to lead the technical vision for conversational AI, leveraging Twilio's data ecosystem and communication scale to build customer-facing AI capabilities such as Conversational Memory, Enterprise Knowledge, and Behavioral Data Intelligence. This role will influence the design and evolution of Twilio's ML/AI Ops foundation, set long-term architectural guardrails, and ensure adherence to responsible AI principles. The architect will drive cross-organizational initiatives, solve complex technical challenges, and elevate technical standards across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive a long-term AI/ML architectural vision aligned with business goals, focusing on data and memory for customer engagement.
  • Own the strategic roadmap for Twilio's ML/AI Ops platform and tooling, ensuring unified model development, deployment, and lifecycle management.
  • Evaluate and implement modern LLM architectures, RAG systems, MCP/tooling frameworks, and inference optimization techniques.
  • Lead architecture for agentic AI systems including orchestration, reasoning, tool usage, and contextual grounding.
  • Stay current with advancements in LLMs, agent frameworks, reasoning systems, and AI infrastructure.
  • Transition from executive communication to deep-dive code reviews and pair programming with engineers.
  • Partner with Product Management to turn roadmap into technical milestones mapping to customer value.
  • Contribute hands-on technical expertise while providing strategic direction and mentorship.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, with 6+ years building and scaling production-grade ML systems at platform level.
  • Extensive experience with ML Ops and LLM Ops patterns, including evaluation metrics, automated retraining loops, and monitoring for non-deterministic AI features.
  • Deep expertise in production-grade ML/AI systems, including transformer models, LLM orchestration, embedding models, inference optimization, and vector stores.
  • Deep understanding of Context Engineering lifecycle: semantic retrieval, contextual compression, state management across multi-turn conversations.
  • Strong background in cloud-based services using AWS, GCP, or Azure, with experience managing high-volume data and various data stores.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with ability to mentor engineers and influence company-wide technical strategy.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, or related field.

Compensation & Benefits

Estimated pay ranges vary by location: $275,840–344,800 for Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington D.C.; $292,080–365,100 for New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California (outside SF Bay Area); $324,480–405,600 for San Francisco Bay Area. Eligible for equity plan and corporate bonus plan. Benefits include health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, and paid parental leave.

Location & Travel

This role is remote and based in the United States. Approximately 5% travel is anticipated for in-person connection.
