About the job

Instacart is transforming the grocery industry, connecting customers with the food they love through a four-sided marketplace (Consumer, Shoppers, Retailers, Advertisers). The Design Team is dedicated to making grocery shopping effortless, blending product thinking, brand storytelling, and behavioral insight to create high-performing growth experiences.

We are hiring a Staff Experience Designer to join the Core Experience team, leading work across multiple touchpoints in the end-to-end online grocery experience in-app. This role partners closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Brand, Data Science, and Research to drive measurable business outcomes while strengthening customer trust and loyalty.

About the Job

  • Drive and lead experiences across consumer-facing products to create highly personalized journeys.
  • Lead end-to-end experience design briefs across all surfaces and modalities, including agentic interfaces.
  • Craft narratives, naming, and value propositions, creating artifacts like strategy docs, flows, and storyboards.
  • Define and own experience frameworks mapping key journeys (first 3 orders, repeat patterns, subscription adoption, household management).
  • Shape content, hierarchy, and information architecture across surfaces.
  • Codify experiential principles and translate them into patterns and interaction rules.
  • Use AI-assisted prototyping and concept development as a core practice.
  • Design for visual clarity, pacing, and density, establishing patterns and grids.
  • Work with Research to uncover customer insights and translate them into journey maps and principles.
  • Mentor partners on journey-based thinking and advocate for cohesive, principle-driven experiences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience designing consumer-facing digital products across web and mobile.
  • Portfolio highlighting complex, multi-step journeys and end-to-end flows including marketing channels.
  • Fluency in at least two design languages: content design, UX/product design, visual design, design strategy, design research.
  • Exceptional eye for design system detail.
  • Proven ability to partner with product and business leaders.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills; you are a writer.
  • Case studies of brand-centric product design driven by user insights and data science.
  • Track record of navigating ambiguity and multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Fluency in Google Slides and Figma; desire for additional tools like Claude Code, Loveable, Cursor, and ChatGPT.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in marketplaces, e-commerce, grocery, CPG, or membership/subscription products.
  • Experience shaping onboarding, activation, and retention journeys.
  • Familiarity with meal planning, nutrition, health goals, and personalization.
  • Experience designing high-visibility surfaces like home, personalized feeds, and merchandising placements.
  • Experience working within and evolving large-scale design systems.
  • Comfort with distributed, cross-functional teams.

Compensation

Base pay range for Canadian candidates: CAN$198,000—$209,000 CAD. Eligible for new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
