Staff Software Engineer

Gusto's mission is to grow the small business economy by handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. The company has teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Business Insurance team, you will build the next generation of the business insurance purchase experience. You will take projects from design through implementation to launch, working with a team to ship AI-powered features that simplify how businesses discover, evaluate, and purchase insurance.

Business Insurance is one of Gusto's fastest-growing areas, owning the end-to-end insurance experience for P&C products such as Workers' Compensation and General Liability, as well as PEO.

• Design, build, and test core Business Insurance products that are reliable and scalable.
• Design and implement innovative AI-powered Business Insurance experiences.
• Iterate quickly based on feedback and metrics once features are live.
• Partner with product, design, and cross-functional partners to refine ideas and shape scope.
• Mentor and develop engineers on your team through pairing, code review, and knowledge sharing.

• 8+ years of software development experience, with 2+ years working on customer-facing products at scale.
• AI-native mindset with AI tools embedded in daily workflow.
• Proven delivery of multi-quarter projects end-to-end.
• Strong platform and application engineering experience (services, APIs, data flows, observability).
• Experience building, deploying, and evaluating AI solutions in production is a plus.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails and Python is a plus.

Cash compensation is targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).

This role is based in New York, NY and is hybrid. Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York are expected to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. A two-day travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required.
