Staff / Principal

Affirm is reinventing credit cards by working directly with card issuers to create new types of cards with straightforward, flexible terms. As the lead engineer for our EU teams, you will be responsible for architecture across cards and relationships with EU counterparts, working across stacks on just-in-time transaction processing (milliseconds) and post-transaction ledgering and reconciliation.

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale and tie it to critical, business-impacting projects.
• Be the lead software engineer for all cards in the EU.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are managed.
• Act as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own team operations and availability, ensuring monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place for on-call efforts.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, and advocating through writing and tech talks.
• Develop talent by providing feedback and guidance, leading by example.
• Participate in an on-call rotation as a requirement.

• 8+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Proficiency in designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale with technologies like Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Proficiency in developing front-end applications.
• Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating functionality through technical and execution plans.
• Ability to thrive in ambiguity and understand systems from low-level language idioms to large-system architecture.
• Mastery in gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for global collaboration.

Base pay grade P, equity grade 6. ESP base pay range per year: €103,000 - €139,000. Total compensation may include monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental, and vision for you and dependents. Remote Spain. Remote-first with flexibility; most roles can be done from almost anywhere within the country of employment. Some positions may require in-person work occasionally, and all new hires attend an in-person onboarding.
