Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Order Platform)

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Order Platform team, you will shape the systems that power every Affirm purchase after checkout—orders, captures, refunds, and settlement. You will drive technical strategy to enable reliable transactions at scale, consolidate the internal platform behind Affirm's post-checkout APIs, and set technical direction for a small, senior team within Financial Platforms.

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale and tie it to critical, business-impacting projects.
• Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle with product management, design, and analytics to manage technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.
• Act as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own your team's operations and availability by ensuring monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting are in place for on-call efforts.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, and advocating for them through writing and tech talks.
• Help develop talent by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Analytical and discerning in designing services with clear API boundaries, strong reliability, and thoughtful handling of consistency, idempotency, and failure modes—ideally in payments, commerce, ledger, or other financially-sensitive domains.
• Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution plans.
• Comfortable moving from low-level language idioms to architecture of large systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT): $230,000 - $290,000 per year. Base pay range (all other U.S. states): $204,000 - $264,000 per year. Total compensation may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents.
