Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Search)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The new team will own recommendations and search experiences, and explore opportunities to improve customer experience, monetization, and merchant value, laying the foundation for an agentic platform.

As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Search) on the Consumer Engineering team, you will set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale, collaborate across product development, act as a force-multiplier, own operations and availability, foster a culture of quality, and help develop talent.

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale and tie it to critical, business-impacting projects.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are understood and managed.
• Act as a force-multiplier through definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own your team's operations and availability by ensuring monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, and advocating beyond your team through writing and tech talks.
• Help develop talent by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Experience developing consumer experiences using UI frameworks like React.
• 2+ years of experience working in search or related recommendation engines.
• Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution plans.
• Ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
• Comfort with ambiguity and moving from low-level language idioms to architecture of large systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.

Base pay range per year: CAD $181,000 - $241,000. Total compensation may include monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents. Employees may be eligible for equity rewards offered by Affirm Holdings, Inc. (parent company).
