About Samsara
Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness IoT data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. Samsara helps improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of physical operations across industries such as agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing.
About the Role
The Maps team is building the shared geospatial platform that sources, ingests, enriches, and serves map data used across Samsara's products. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set the technical direction for this platform, working across the geospatial stack: building data ingestion and processing pipelines, modeling and serving map data, improving map matching and routing foundations, and creating APIs for spatial capabilities. This is a small team with broad ownership, and the systems you build will become foundational infrastructure for teams across the company.
Responsibilities
- Shape the technical direction of the Maps team
- Build geospatial systems and integrations supporting foundational features across most Samsara products
- Scale offerings to support storage, query, and computational load of real-time features
- Consolidate team-specific geospatial solutions into scalable platform-wide offerings
- Build agentic solutions that allow customers to self-serve data
- Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
- Partner with engineering leadership on strategic bets and tradeoffs
- Represent Samsara externally through talks, open source, and community engagement
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
- Strong programming and design fundamentals
- 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
- 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with GIS technologies and spatial analysis, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS, and geospatial data validation
- Familiarity with geospatial data formats and open mapping ecosystems, including GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and OSM PBF
Compensation & Benefits
Annual base salary range: $162,400—$290,000 USD. Eligible for initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff and ongoing refresh opportunities. Samsara offers a flexible remote model, professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more.
