Staff Software Engineer, Onboarding

The Onboarding team owns the first experience every user has after signing up for Reddit. The team combines polished product engineering, ML-powered personalization, and rigorous product experimentation, in close partnership with product, design, and data science.

• Foster and guide the technical strategy for Onboarding, defining and accelerating the backend architecture for newly onboarded users, including signal-collection systems, personalization pipelines, and experimentation infrastructure.
• Partner with the Engineering Manager to cultivate a growth engineering mindset, prioritizing experimentation and iteration.
• Scale impact through collaborative engineering, building partnerships with teams like Relevance, Feeds, and Notifications, including ML-powered systems.
• Instrument, measure, and iterate by establishing instrumentation and experimentation foundations for rigorous A/B tests on growth levers.
• Guide cross-functional alignment with Product, Design, Data Science, and other Consumer platform teams.
• Raise the bar on engineering excellence, advocating for reliability, scalability, and maintainability across a high-scale distributed system.

• At least 7 years of experience.
• Steered cross-team projects that solved tangible business problems.
• Strategic partner and systems thinker, able to plan long-term while helping engineers through blockers.
• Mentor who helps other engineers level up.
• Deeply data-informed and logical, fluent in experimentation, funnels, and retention.
• Comfortable with growth-team ambiguity and speed.
• Clear, transparent communication for any audience.
• Experience with ranking, recommendations, and personalization, including designing backend architectures, retrieval systems, and inference pipelines for ML-heavy products.

Base salary range: $217,000—$303,000 USD. Eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units. Benefits include comprehensive healthcare, 401k with employer match, flexible vacation, paid parental leave, and more.
