Ten trillion parameters is a statement of intent, not a finished product. Pre-training at that scale typically runs three to six months, and the final size will only be locked in later. ByteDance is not promising a release date or a benchmark score. It is signaling that it can marshal the compute, the data, and the patience to play at the very top of the table.
The comparison to Anthropic's Mythos system is the quiet tell. Chinese labs have spent the past two years closing the gap with the leading US outfits, and this move suggests the gap is now measured in months, not years. The strategic logic is straightforward: if you cannot out-innovate the leader on the first try, you build something big enough to force the leader to keep looking over its shoulder.
