Elon Musk’s attempt at an AI Wikipedia hasn’t been updated in months
xAI's Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia with AI-generated articles that Elon Musk once promised would be a "massive improvement" over Wikipedia, apparently hasn't been updated since April 24th, according to a report from Lawfare. "As far as we can tell, no entry has changed in more than three months," Lawfare said.
Grokipedia was announced with the kind of confidence that usually precedes a long silence. Elon Musk promised an AI-generated encyclopedia that would be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. The project launched in October 2025 with 885,000 articles, expanded to more than six million by November, and then stopped. According to Lawfare, no entry has changed since April 24th.
A static encyclopedia is not an encyclopedia. It is a snapshot, and snapshots age quickly. The live page still advertises recent changes, but the section underneath reads "No live edits av..." — a truncated message that tells the real story. The machinery of continuous revision, the thing that gives Wikipedia its value, is absent.
The numbers are worth pausing on. Six million articles is a large corpus by any standard. But volume without maintenance is just a pile of files. Wikipedia's strength has never been the initial write-up; it is the endless correction, the citation wars, the slow accumulation of nuance. Grokipedia appears to have skipped that entire layer.
There is a structural reason this happened. AI-generated content is cheap to produce in bulk, but it is expensive to verify. A human editor can spot a bad sentence in seconds. An automated system needs constant retraining, constant monitoring, constant human oversight to catch the subtle errors that language models make. That oversight is the part that apparently stopped.
Musk's promise of a massive improvement over Wikipedia was always a strange target. Wikipedia is not perfect, but it is a living organism. It breathes through edits. Grokipedia, for now, is a museum piece with a fresh coat of paint. The question is not whether it will catch up to Wikipedia. The question is whether anyone will notice it stopped breathing.
