Google's SynthID watermark is hard to break, but it doesn't solve AI misinformation
Deciding what's real on the Internet won't be easy in the future.
Google's SynthID is a technical achievement. It is not a solution.
The watermark survives compression, cropping, and most of the casual edits a curious user might attempt. That is genuinely difficult engineering, and it deserves credit. But the premise behind the marketing push—that labeling AI-generated content will meaningfully restore trust in what circulates online—collapses under the weight of its own arithmetic.
Consider the production curve. Humanity needed 149 years to produce 1.5 billion photographs. Generative AI matched that output in eighteen months. Google alone has now crossed one hundred billion AI-generated images and videos. SynthID can tag every one of them. It cannot make a single person read the tag.
The deeper problem is structural. Watermarks identify provenance; they do not confer credibility. A label that says "this image was made by a machine" tells the viewer nothing about whether the image is being used to inform, to deceive, or to entertain. The misinformation economy does not run on unlabeled content. It runs on content that is stripped of context, recontextualized, or simply ignored by audiences who never check the metadata in the first place. SynthID addresses none of those vectors.
There is also the matter of coverage. Google is one vendor among many. Open-source image generators, smaller commercial labs, and a long tail of open-weight models produce content that carries no SynthID signature at all. A watermark that only applies to a fraction of the supply cannot function as a universal trust signal. It is a partial solution to a universal problem, and partial solutions tend to be weaponized by the very actors they claim to counter.
Google knows this. The partnerships announced alongside the watermark expansion are less about enforcement and more about signaling that the company takes the issue seriously. It is reputation management dressed up as infrastructure. The technology is real; the implication that it will meaningfully constrain AI-driven misinformation is not.
The honest framing is straightforward. SynthID is a useful forensic tool for platforms and researchers. It is not a public-facing answer to the question of what is real. Anyone waiting for a watermark to solve AI misinformation is waiting for the wrong product.
