The massive Toba eruption seems to have had little climate impact.
The largest volcanic eruption of the last 2.6 million years has been demoted from a near-extinction event to a footnote in the climate record. New sediment analysis from a crater lake on the Kenya-Tanzania border suggests Mount Toba's massive blast, roughly a thousand times larger than Pinatubo's 1991 output, cooled the planet by perhaps half a degree for under two years.
The finding quietly dismantles a popular narrative. For decades, the Toba catastrophe theory held that the eruption's sulfate haze plunged Earth into a volcanic winter, bottlenecking human populations to a few thousand survivors. The new data, drawn from mud that records the actual atmospheric response, shows the cooling was modest and brief. The mechanism is elegant: beyond a certain eruption magnitude, heavier sulfate aerosols settle quickly and lose their ability to scatter sunlight.
This is a reminder that scale in geology does not always translate to impact. The biggest event is not automatically the most consequential one. For those tracking climate signals, the lesson is that the relationship between forcing and response is nonlinear, and the largest perturbations can sometimes leave the faintest traces.
