PBS station fears losing 50TB of data after being ghosted by cloud storage provider

The collapse of a cloud storage provider is rarely a clean exit. It is usually a slow, silent unraveling, marked by unreturned emails and servers that stay powered but unresponsive. Nine PBS is now living inside that unraveling, and the lawsuit it filed against Iron Mountain Data Centers is a reminder that in the cloud, your data is only as safe as the weakest contractual link.
At the center of the dispute is 50 terabytes of archival footage, including coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Great Flood of 1993, and the history of East St. Louis. The station calls most of it unique and irreplaceable. That is not hyperbole. For a public broadcaster, this is the institutional memory of a region, and it now sits in a Denver data center that Nine PBS cannot access.
The chain of custody is the problem. Nine PBS contracted with Open Source Storage, which in turn used Iron Mountain's facility. When OSS went defunct, the station lost its point of contact. Iron Mountain, holding the physical hardware, has reportedly told Ars Technica that it does not have access to the data on the servers. That may be technically true, but it is also a convenient position. The hardware is there. The data is on the disks. The question is who has the keys, and who has the legal standing to demand they be turned.
This is the hidden fragility of the cloud. The term suggests weightlessness, but the infrastructure is deeply physical. Every byte lives on a drive in a building owned by someone who may have no relationship with the end user. When a middleman vanishes, the user is left arguing with a landlord who has no incentive to help. Iron Mountain's refusal to release the data is not necessarily malice. It is risk management. Handing over 50TB to a party that is not your customer opens a door to liability, and data centers are not in the business of taking chances.
The lawsuit is a blunt instrument, but it may be the only one available. Nine PBS is asking a court to compel Iron Mountain to act, and the outcome will hinge on the fine print of contracts that no one read carefully when the data was uploaded. The lesson for any organization is unglamorous but essential: know where your data physically lives, and know who has the authority to release it. The cloud is not a place. It is a chain of custody, and every link matters.
For now, the footage sits in limbo, a 70-year archive waiting on a judge's ruling. The irony is that the data was likely moved to the cloud for safety and accessibility. Instead, it has become less accessible than it ever was on a shelf in a basement. The cloud was supposed to make data immortal. It turns out it can also make it disappear without going anywhere.
