Suno shares plans to combat spammy AI music
Suno announced plans to implement a new watermarking technology and download policy to limit the spread of spammy AI tracks and increase transparency. In a lengthy blog post, CEO and co-founder Mikey Shulman laid out the company's principles and the next steps for the company as it seeks legitimacy.
Suno is making a calculated move toward legitimacy, and the timing is not accidental. The company's announcement of watermarking, fingerprinting, and a stricter download policy is a direct response to the flood of low-quality AI tracks that have been clogging streaming platforms and eroding public trust in the entire category.
Watermarking is the easy part. The harder work is the partnership piece. Suno says it wants to work with distribution platforms to combat fraud and misuse, which is a polite way of admitting that the company cannot police its own output alone. The platforms that host this content hold the real leverage, and they have been under pressure from labels and artists to do something about the noise.
This is also a play for credibility with the music industry. By voluntarily adopting what it calls emerging industry standards, Suno is trying to position itself as a responsible actor before regulators and rights holders force the issue. The company wants to be seen as part of the solution, not the problem that keeps generating indistinguishable tracks under familiar artist names.
The download policy matters more than it looks. Restricting how users can extract and redistribute audio is a quiet admission that the current system has been enabling bad behavior. It is a small concession, but it signals that Suno understands where the abuse actually happens.
None of this solves the deeper question of whether AI-generated music deserves the same commercial footing as human-made work. But Suno is not trying to answer that question today. It is trying to buy time, reduce friction with platforms, and keep its product viable while the industry figures out the rules. That is the practical play, and it is the only one available.
