The ultimate eclipse chase: A Concorde raced against the Moon's shadow
Fitted with telescopes, the plane did our longest imaging of the Sun's corona.
The Concorde was never merely a machine for getting from Paris to New York in three hours. It was a statement about what speed could buy, and in June 1973 a small group of scientists decided to spend that currency on the Sun.
They flew the prototype 001 along the path of a total solar eclipse across Africa, matching the Moon's shadow at more than twice the speed of sound. The arithmetic is quietly staggering. On the ground, totality rarely lasts more than seven and a half minutes, and only in the most favorable equatorial geometry. The Concorde stretched that window to 74 minutes, nearly ten times the natural limit.
What looks like a stunt was actually a piece of disciplined observation. The corona, the Sun's outer atmosphere, is notoriously difficult to study because it is only visible during totality. Every extra minute of darkness is a minute of clean data. The scientists fitted the aircraft with telescopes and used the speed to hold the shadow in place, effectively turning a supersonic airliner into a flying observatory.
The record has never been broken, and it likely never will be. No commercial aircraft flies that fast anymore, and the economics of a dedicated eclipse-chasing supersonic jet are not coming back. The painted map on the nose of the prototype at Le Bourget is a reminder that the Concorde's real legacy was not just speed, but what speed made possible when pointed at the right problem.
