Instacart is transforming the grocery industry, connecting customers with the food they love. The Fraud, Appeasement & Identity team protects the marketplace and its users. The Identity Platform group builds core services for user verification, account security, and identity signals. We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Identity and Risk Platform team, owning critical trust infrastructure across authentication, account lifecycle, identity verification, and graph/relationship modeling. This role manages a team of backend and platform engineers, directly influencing fraud losses, account security, and marketplace integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Own the vision, roadmap, and execution for Identity and Fraud & Risk platforms, partnering with Product, Security, and Fraud leadership.
  • Manage and develop a team of software engineers, setting goals, providing coaching, and building an inclusive culture.
  • Ensure reliable, high-quality systems by defining service health goals, improving on-call practices, and driving remediation.
  • Collaborate with Product, Data Science, Security, Fraud Operations, Legal, and external vendors on initiatives like account takeover prevention and identity verification.
  • Define technical direction for identity modeling, risk signals, and unified risk scoring.
  • Lead AI-forward development practices, including AI agents in design, coding, testing, and operations.
  • Balance roadmap delivery with operational excellence, managing technical debt and security work.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in engineering leadership or management.
  • Experience building large-scale distributed systems or real-time decisioning platforms (identity, fraud, risk, payments).
  • Strong backend/platform engineering background with Go, Java, or Python.
  • Hands-on familiarity with AWS or GCP and modern datastores like Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis.
  • Experience managing engineers through hiring, performance, and career development.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners and working in AI-forward environments.

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay range for Canadian candidates: CAN$230,000—$242,500. Eligible for new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants. Instacart offers highly market-competitive compensation and benefits.
