About Gusto
Gusto's mission is to grow the small business economy by handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. The company has teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York.
About the Role
Gusto is seeking a Head of Internal Controls to join its Finance, BizOps & Strategy team. This leader will build and scale a forward-thinking internal controls environment, leading the controls program across business process controls and IT controls. The scope includes proprietary and third-party systems supporting Gusto's payroll, health benefits, retirement, and other financial products. The role involves building the team, setting strategy, and embedding practical controls into product and system design. The ideal candidate will also define an AI-forward internal controls function, applying AI to controls work and establishing oversight of AI-enabled financial processes.
What You'll Do
- Build and lead Gusto's internal controls function, unifying business process and IT controls under a single program.
- Own the risk-based ICFR framework across financial processes, including scoping, control design, documentation, testing, issue evaluation, and remediation.
- Partner with Accounting, Finance, Product, Engineering, Data, Security, and Risk to build control and auditability into new products and systems.
- Set the vision for an AI-forward internal controls function, using AI and automation to rethink risk identification, evidence evaluation, and control testing.
- Lead the relationship with external auditors and establish governance and accountability for internal controls.
What We're Looking For
- 12+ years of progressive experience in a Big 4 accounting firm, internal audit, or SOX compliance role in a complex, scaling organization.
- 5+ years of people leadership experience.
- Deep knowledge of US GAAP, the COSO framework, and ICFR assessment requirements.
- Breadth across business process controls and IT controls, with depth in at least one discipline.
- Experience in a technology-driven environment with proprietary applications, automated controls, and complex data flows.
- Experience in fintech, payments, payroll, or financial services is preferred.
- An AI-forward mindset, with practical understanding of AI risks in the control environment.
- CPA, CIA, CISA, or comparable certification is preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
Cash compensation is between $188,510 - $232,496/year in Denver and between $221,275 - $272,906/year for New York/San Francisco. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
