Principal Software Engineer

Twilio is seeking an experienced and visionary Principal Engineer to join the Data Substrate team and lead the design and development of the Data Platform. The role involves architecting scalable and reliable data solutions, driving technical innovation, and mentoring a team of engineers.

• Lead the design and development of data infrastructure, driving technical vision and strategy for scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Serve as subject matter expert in distributed systems and data technologies.
• Architect and implement scalable data systems, storage solutions, and processing frameworks using state-of-the-art technologies.
• Drive technical innovation and research in emerging data technologies.
• Mentor and coach engineers, fostering technical excellence and collaboration.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, and security throughout the data lifecycle.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of software development experience, with at least 5 years in a technical leadership role.
• Proven track record of architecting large-scale data platforms using cloud computing (e.g., AWS) and deploying via K8s/Terraform/Helm.
• Expertise in big data technologies such as Clickhouse, Kafka, Spark.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, Bash, Go.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Track record of elevating engineering standards and mentoring across teams.
• Deep commitment to operational excellence, high availability, observability, and incident response.

• Knowledge of authorization/authentication systems.
• Networking and network security knowledge.
• Deep expertise in Clickhouse at scale.

This role is remote and based in the United States, but not eligible in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, or surrounding areas.

For candidates in Colorado, the estimated pay range is $188,240 - $235,300. This role may be eligible for Twilio's equity plan and corporate bonus plan.
