About the job
Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Economic Research Data Platform team, part of the Anthropic Institute, studies AI's economic impact. As a Research Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain critical infrastructure powering research on AI's economic effects, including data pipelines, ML systems, and APIs.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate data pipelines that turn raw usage data into clean, privacy-preserving datasets.
- Design systems including classifiers, probes on model internals, and ML pipelines to understand Claude's usage and economic impact.
- Develop self-serve workflows to ingest and integrate external data sources.
- Develop APIs, libraries, and interfaces serving data to researchers and the public.
- Partner with researchers, data scientists, policy experts, and cross-functional teams.
- Contribute to roadmap, documentation, and practices for self-serve data access with safety and governance.
- Ensure data reliability, integrity, and privacy compliance.
Qualifications
- Significant experience building data-intensive applications, pipelines, or internal tooling in production.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) and clean, well-documented Python.
- Intuition for analytics workflows and empathy for researchers/data scientists.
- Comfort making technical decisions with incomplete information while maintaining engineering standards.
- Full-stack mindset and strong communication skills.
- Interest in AI's economic implications.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience with modern data transformation, orchestration, and query frameworks.
- Building systems on LLMs.
- Privacy-preserving data systems or data governance/lineage tooling.
- Building and operating web services.
- Full-stack development or complex data visualization.
- Background in econometrics, statistics, or quantitative social science.
Compensation
Annual salary: $320,000—$405,000 USD.
Location and Hybrid Policy
San Francisco, CA. Hybrid: all staff expected in one of our offices at least 25% of the time.
