About the job

About Deepgram

Deepgram is a leading platform for the Voice AI economy, providing real-time APIs for speech-to-text (STT), text-to-speech (TTS), and building production-grade voice agents. Over 200,000 developers and 1,300+ organizations build voice offerings powered by Deepgram, including Twilio, Cloudflare, Sierra, and others. Deepgram's voice-native foundation models are accessed via cloud APIs or as self-hosted/on-premises software. Backed by a recent Series C, Deepgram has processed over 50,000 years of audio and transcribed more than 1 trillion words.

Role Overview

Deepgram is seeking seasoned Data Scientists to join its Research Staff. In this role, you will help build an industrial 'data factory' to power the next generation of Voice AI systems, enabling models that go beyond basic transcription to capture nuanced meanings in complex conversations, adapt to diverse speech patterns, and generate empathic responses. You will collaborate with product, engineering, and data teams to build and deploy models on Deepgram's scalable voice API.

Responsibilities

  • Drive high-performance data acquisition, preparation, and synthesis pipelines for next-generation speech and language AI foundation models.
  • Develop advanced characterizations of complex conversational audio using signal processing techniques and deep learning models.
  • Collaborate with DataOps and Engineering to create automated systems that scale human annotators' ability to label high-value data and provide feedback on model outputs.
  • Build advanced benchmarking methodologies and curated datasets for evaluating conversational voice systems.
  • Document and present results of data experiments and analysis for internal and external audiences.

Qualifications

  • Experience building data processing pipelines from scratch and owning the entire data stack (acquisition, characterization, cleaning, serving, transformation).
  • Experience applying statistical methods and deep learning models to understand complex data.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex concepts for different audiences.
  • Strong software engineering skills, particularly clean, modular code in Python and PyTorch.

Nice to Have

  • Background in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Language Processing.
  • Experience building models with speech and audio experience.

Compensation & Benefits

Estimated base salary $150K – $220K, with equity and bonus (10% annual bonus).
