Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, a platform that helps organizations with physical operations harness IoT data to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The Machine Learning / Computer Vision team builds end-to-end applications across product pillars including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring.
We are seeking an Applied Scientist to generate insights from rich customer interactions and the 2T+ data points collected annually by sensors and cameras. This remote role is open to candidates in the United States and requires up to 5% travel. Relocation assistance is not provided.
In this role, you will
- Build and improve the accuracy of ML/CV models, including retraining and optimizing models for Samsara-specific problems.
- Work with petabyte-scale data from camera and sensor devices to develop new models.
- Optimize models for inference on the backend and/or edge devices.
- Partner with firmware and full-stack teams to deploy models for optimal performance and cost.
- Stay connected to industry and academic research and adopt novel technology.
- Collaborate with product teams to translate customer needs into ML/CV solutions.
Minimum requirements
- BS or MS in Computer Science or other technical degree with 5+ years of experience as an Applied Scientist, ML Engineer, or similar role working on Computer Vision; or Ph.D. in CS or quantitative discipline with 3+ years of experience in Computer Vision.
- Strong proficiency in one or more common languages (e.g., C++, Golang, Java, Python).
- Proficiency with common ML tools (e.g., Spark, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Familiarity with managing data processing and ML code via GitHub.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Ideal candidate also has
- Experience implementing ML models on large datasets (100K to 1M+) on the edge.
- Experience building, deploying, and optimizing ML models on the edge.
- Experience with state-of-the-art models for road segmentation, object detection, and tracking.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Comfort with full-stack/backend development to understand underlying data structures.
Compensation & Benefits
Annual base salary range: $170,170—$319,000 USD. Eligible for initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, ongoing refresh opportunities, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity. Additional benefits include a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and a flexible remote model.
