About the job
About Gusto
Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, Gusto is building a workplace that reflects the people it serves. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
About the Role
Gusto is looking for an experienced Senior Data Science Leader to empower the Sales Data team, which powers insights, forecasting, and measurement infrastructure behind revenue acquisition, expansion, and retention. This leader will be both a strategic partner and execution-focused, guiding senior sales and marketing leaders through complex analytical questions, developing analysts into statistical and scientific thinkers, and collaborating cross-functionally with Sales Operations, Data Engineering, Finance, R&D, and more.
As AI tooling becomes embedded in Gusto's data infrastructure, the role has two mandates: operational (partner with Data Engineering to assess and rebuild the sales data foundation) and transformational (evolve the team from query fulfillment to advanced forecasting, causal inference, and analytical rigor).
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead the Sales Analytics team, driving vision and championing data scientists and analysts to deliver impact across customer acquisition and product expansion sales teams.
- Conduct deep-dive analyses to identify revenue drivers and anomalies, translating complex data into clear insights for senior leadership.
- Rebuild the data foundation alongside Data Engineering and Service Platform partners.
- Partner with the Chief Revenue Officer, Sales Operations, Data Engineering, and Service Platform team to align on a shared data and infrastructure roadmap.
- Evolve sales forecasting methodology with rigorous analytics methods (e.g., propensity scoring, seasonality controls).
- Enable self-service analytics with AI, leveraging Gusto's AI-first development to create capabilities for operations partners.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing analytics team, shifting culture from reactive query fulfillment to strategic analysis.
- Act as connective tissue across the data org, identifying opportunities for deeper technical solutions.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in data science or related fields, with at least 4+ years leading a growing analytics team.
- Leadership with a builder mindset, able to step into details when needed.
- Strong command of experimental design, causal reasoning, and quasi-experimental methods (e.g., difference-in-differences, synthetic control, regression discontinuity, propensity score matching).
- Deep experience with Salesforce data at scale, including data extraction strategies, CRM-to-warehouse reconciliation.
- Infrastructure-first mindset with a track record of rebuilding tech-debt-laden data environments.
- Strong SQL skills, hands-on experience with dbt and Snowflake.
- Sales and revenue domain knowledge: pipeline management, forecasting, quota and attainment tracking, acquisition and expansion motions, cross-sell/upsell analytics in a multi-product SaaS environment.
- Cross-functional partnership and change management experience.
- AI-forward orientation, understanding how AI tooling reshapes the analyst role.
- SaaS/Growth background: proven track record in high-growth SaaS or technology environments.
Compensation & Benefits
Annual base salary range: $218,000 - $255,000 in San Francisco & New York; $185,000 - $217,000 in Denver. Final offers determined by multiple factors. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
Work Location
Hybrid: Denver, CO; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA. Employees based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role).
