Senior Python Engineer

The Database Experience (DBX) team builds the libraries and tools developers use daily with MongoDB. This role focuses on designing, writing, and supporting open source libraries for the Python ecosystem, including PyMongo, Django MongoDB Backend, PyMongoArrow, and LangChain MongoDB. The team is distributed worldwide.

• Develop and support MongoDB Python drivers and subsidiary libraries.
• Write and maintain open source specifications defining common behavior and APIs across all drivers.
• Investigate bugs and support requests from commercial customers, open source users, and internal users.
• Collaborate with Product and Server teams on designs for new user-facing MongoDB features.

• Substantial experience writing high-quality software in Python.
• Extensive knowledge of Python tools and frameworks, including scientific Python and web development frameworks.
• Practical experience with AI/ML frameworks and technologies in Python, including large language models and agentic tools (a plus).
• Interest in open source development and communities.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
• Self-motivated with strong time management.

• Within one month: understand driver architecture and complete small bug fixes.
• Within three months: contribute effectively, fix bugs, implement features, and review peers' code.
• Within six months: implement major features, contribute to specifications, and ship a major open source feature.
• Within twelve months: improve codebase quality and lead design of major features.

Base salary range for U.S.-based candidates: $126,000—$248,000 USD.
