Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Payments)

Affirm is a financial technology company that provides a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees or surprises. The Engineering team builds systems that power Affirm's mission, focusing on reliable, performant, and scalable solutions.

As part of the Consumer Payments team, you will work on Affirm's Payment Processing Network, which processes billions of dollars in payments each year. You will collaborate with partner teams across Europe and the US to support feature development, international expansion, and key financial metrics.

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics in the product development lifecycle.
• Identify and solve project, process, technology, or business issues.
• Support operations and availability of your team's artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards.
• Help develop talent by providing feedback and guidance.

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components.
• High-quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
• Proficiency in making significant changes in a large code base.
• Ownership of your growth, proactively seeking feedback.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for global collaboration.

Base pay range per year: £120,000 - £168,000. Total compensation may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidised medical coverage, dental, and vision for you and your dependents.

Location: UK Remote. Remote-first with flexibility built in. Most roles can be done from almost anywhere within the country of employment. Some positions may occasionally require in-person work at an Affirm office. All new hires are invited to attend an in-person onboarding experience.
