About the job
About Gusto
Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. The company has teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York.
About the Role
As a UX Researcher, you will directly inform Gusto's future product investments, partnering with senior leadership including VPs and above. The role is equivalent to a Senior Staff level. Success means providing a clear view of where AI experiences are working or falling short, and earning the trust of senior executives with your evidence.
What You'll Do
- Set and drive a quantitative research roadmap across R&D, prioritizing where evidence reduces risk on major product bets.
- Develop psychometric frameworks, validated constructs, and scales to measure customer experience with Gusto's AI features.
- Own Gusto's approach to quantitative methods, from org-wide survey strategy to generalizing qualitative findings at scale (e.g., MaxDiff, conjoint) and designing rigorous studies that reduce bias.
- Partner with Data Science to combine behavioral, attitudinal, and sentiment data into a coherent customer view.
- Build and maintain clear segmentation of ideal customer profiles.
- Build scaled usability measurement, including large-sample benchmarking and competitive comparisons.
- Elevate the quantitative research practice: mentor researchers, build shared tools and standards, and advance an AI-native way of working (e.g., Claude Code, Gumloop).
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of experience leading quantitative UX research, with a track record of influencing strategic decisions at the executive level.
- Deep expertise in survey science, sampling, pricing research, and statistical modeling, including psychometric frameworks and validated measurement scales.
- Experience with AI and LLM evaluation methods, logs analysis, and behavioral analysis.
- Proficiency in SQL and Python, and hands-on experience with survey platforms such as Qualtrics.
- Experience designing and running usability research at scale, from benchmarking to tie-breaking evaluations.
- Track record of setting research standards that scale across teams or an organization.
- Experience working on AI-powered products and curiosity about using AI tools to scale research.
- Experience enabling and coaching non-researchers to conduct their own research.
