About the job

Overview

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. At Affirm, data powers our underwriting and fraud decisions, user-facing experiences, servicing, and more. We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Unified Data Platform engineering team. The team is building Affirm's substrate for user-keyed data: a governed, federated layer that replaces ad hoc cross-domain ETL with a single read surface — the data backbone that Affirm's product and ML systems depend on.

Responsibilities

  • Work across organizational boundaries, partnering with domain teams as data producers, collaborating with infrastructure to meet SLOs, and developing a clear understanding of analytics and product consumers across online and offline surfaces.
  • Own correctness and uptime so that downstream teams can build with confidence.
  • Break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery.
  • Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating across engineering, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that consider risks and trade-offs.
  • Support operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts.
  • Contribute to community by engaging in growth and development activities such as participation in the interview process.

Qualifications

  • 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Experience designing, developing and launching backend systems.
  • Proficient in one of Python or Kotlin.
  • Familiar with building blocks of distributed systems, and technologies like AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
  • Ability to take a simple problem or business scenario into a solution that interacts with multiple software components, executing by writing clear, easily understood, well tested and extensible code.
  • Comfortable navigating a large code base, debugging others' code, and providing feedback through code reviews.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with global engineering team.

Compensation

CAN base pay range per year: 133,000 - 183,000 CAD. Pay Grade - L, Equity Grade - 5. Employees new to Affirm typically come in at the start of the pay range.

Benefits

  • 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents.
  • Flexible Spending Wallets for tech, food and lifestyle.
  • Away Days - wellness days to take off work and recharge.
  • Learning & Development programs.
  • Parental benefits.
  • Employee Resource & Community Groups.
  • ESPP - employee stock purchase plan.

Location

Remote Canada - open only to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
