Staff Software Engineer

Airbnb's event logging team owns the platform for capturing user activity events across all clients and backend services, turning raw logs into high-quality data available near-real-time and long-term. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will drive the technical direction of event logging, owning initiatives that span the logging platform and shaping its future. You will partner with teams across the company to identify high-impact opportunities, set a clear technical vision, and guide delivery through products and tooling.

• Collaborate with partner teams to understand pain points, prototype solutions, and drive adoption of logging products.
• Own the technical direction and roadmap for a major area of the logging platform.
• Lead investments into new technical capabilities that unlock product innovation.
• Create and present design, product, and architecture documents; provide feedback on others.
• Translate prototypes into high-quality, scalable, maintainable production code.
• Stay current with industry trends, especially in logging and observability.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers.

• 9+ years of industry engineering experience.
• Experience building internal infrastructure, particularly in event logging and observability, preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills.
• Deep expertise in one or more backend/server languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, C++) and a track record of architecting high-traffic backend systems.
• Ability to work in areas outside your comfort zone and show motivation for personal growth.
• Expertise developing solutions to ambiguous problems.
• Experience mentoring and growing engineers across an organization.
• Demonstrated ability to influence engineering strategy and shape technical priorities.

Base pay range: $212,000—$265,000 USD. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
