About the job

Company

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest.

Role

Staff Software Engineer on the Order Platform team within Financial Platforms - Engineering. You'll shape the systems that power every Affirm purchase after checkout — orders, captures, refunds, and settlement — and drive technical strategy for reliable transactions at scale. The team is consolidating the internal platform behind Affirm's post-checkout APIs, drawing clean domain boundaries, migrating existing merchants, and enabling future product launches.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and tie it to critical, business-impacting projects.
  • Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle with product management, design & analytics to manage technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Act as a force-multiplier through definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes.
  • Own the team's operations and availability — monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting to support "keep the lights on" and on-call efforts.
  • Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, advocating through writing and tech talks.
  • Develop talent by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
  • Analytical and discerning in designing services with clear API boundaries, strong reliability, and thoughtful handling of consistency, idempotency, and failure modes — ideally in a payments, commerce, ledger, or other financially-sensitive domain.
  • Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution plans.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Compensation & Benefits

USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT): $230,000 - $290,000 per year. USA base pay range (all other U.S. states): $204,000 - $264,000 per year. Total compensation may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents. Additional benefits include Flexible Spending Wallets (stipends for Technology, Food, Lifestyle, and family forming expenses), competitive vacation and holiday schedules, and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
