We are seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to join our Data Substrate team. In this role, you will architect scalable and reliable data solutions, collaborate with cross-functional partners, drive technical innovation, and mentor a team of engineers.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert in distributed systems and data technologies.
- Architect and implement scalable data systems, storage solutions, and processing frameworks.
- Drive technical innovation and research in emerging data technologies.
- Mentor and coach engineers, fostering technical excellence and collaboration.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Ensure data quality, integrity, and security throughout the data lifecycle.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in software development.
- Proven track record of architecting and delivering complex data projects at scale.
- Expertise in big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and distributed computing.
- Experience with AWS technologies.
- Proficiency in Python, Java, or Scala.
- Experience with Data Lakehouse architectures (Hudi, Iceberg, or Delta).
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
Desired:
- Contributions to OSS projects.
- Familiarity with data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL processes.
Compensation
The estimated pay ranges for this role are location-dependent: $171,120–$213,900 for Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington D.C.; $181,200–$226,500 for New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California (outside SF Bay Area); $201,280–$251,600 for the San Francisco Bay Area. This role may be eligible for Twilio's equity plan and corporate bonus plan.

Work style
This role is remote and based in the United States, but not eligible in CA, WA, NY, NJ, PA, or CT. While remote-first, you may be asked to report in person on an ad-hoc basis for team gatherings, functional off-sites or customer meetings, and may be required to travel occasionally for project or team in-person meetings.
