Staff Software Engineer, Bazel & Go

Instacart is transforming the grocery industry. The Developer Experience team is a force multiplier for 1000+ engineers, building platforms, tools, and practices to ship high-quality software faster. As a Staff Software Engineer on Developer Experience, you will lead the technical direction for Bazel (build system) and Go (core backend language), owning remote caching, remote build execution, build performance, and developer ergonomics. You'll write code, set architectural direction, and partner across the org to improve build performance, CI reliability, and developer velocity.

• Lead technical direction for Instacart's Bazel build system, including remote caching, RBE, and build performance.
• Lead technical direction for Go platform, frameworks, libraries, and patterns.
• Design and drive multi-quarter initiatives to improve build times, CI reliability, and local development.
• Own developer experience metrics and prioritize investment.
• Partner with infrastructure, platform, and product engineering teams.
• Set technical bar for reliability, performance, upgrade cadence, and ergonomics.
• Mentor engineers and grow the Bazel and Go community.
• Represent the team in cross-org technical discussions.

Minimum: 10+ years of software development experience; deep hands-on expertise with Bazel including remote caching, RBE, and performance tuning; strong production experience with Go services at scale; track record of leading cross-team technical initiatives; experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and distributed systems; strong technical leadership and mentoring.

Preferred: Bachelor's or Master's in CS or equivalent; experience migrating a large codebase to Bazel; experience owning a Go framework; experience defining developer productivity metrics; experience at high-growth companies.

Base pay ranges for US candidates: CA, NY, CT, NJ: $265,000—$279,500; WA: $254,000—$268,000; OR, DE, ME, MA, MD, NH, RI, VT, DC, PA, VA, CO, TX, IL, HI: $243,000—$256,500; All other states: $221,000—$233,000. Eligible for new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
