Staff / Principal

Airbnb is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Communication & Connectivity (CnC) organization. This role will lead initiatives to design and build large-scale, distributed data systems, including batch and real-time processing, to power machine learning models and new product features. The team applies GenAI and large language models (LLMs) to enhance the Airbnb experience, including highly used surfaces like Messaging.

• Shape the team’s long-term vision and roadmap in collaboration with cross-functional partners.
• Build strong relationships with partner engineering teams (backend, client, data science, analytics, ML).
• Design, develop, and maintain reliable, scalable data pipelines (batch and real-time).
• Implement robust offline and online feature building processes for ML products.
• Architect and build ML infrastructure, optimizing for performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Mentor and develop engineers, contributing to the broader data engineering community.

• 9+ years of relevant industry experience with a Bachelor’s/Master’s in CS/EE (or equivalent), or 6+ years with a PhD.
• Strong CS fundamentals and knowledge of architecture and design patterns.
• Experience running data processing pipelines in production using distributed frameworks like Apache Spark or Flink.
• Experience collaborating with client, backend, ML, analytics, product, and business partners.
• Experience working on end-to-end Machine Learning products.
• Excellent communication skills.

This position is US - Remote Eligible, with occasional work at an Airbnb office or offsites as agreed with the manager. Must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity; excluded states are listed on the careers page.

Base pay range: $204,000—$255,000 USD. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
