About the job

Plaid builds the tools and experiences that thousands of developers use to create their own products, powering the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. The Data Governance team ensures Plaid handles consumer and customer data responsibly by enforcing privacy commitments and regulatory obligations in the systems themselves, including verifiable deletion, data-use restrictions, and cataloging/classification.

As a Staff Software Engineer on Data Governance, you will set the technical direction for data governance at scale, leading the design of distributed backend systems that reliably delete, restrict, and track data across dozens of services. You will drive multi-quarter initiatives from ambiguous privacy and regulatory requirements to shipped, auditable infrastructure, and partner with Legal, Privacy, Security, and product-engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical architecture for Plaid's data-governance platform
  • Lead the design and delivery of multi-quarter, cross-team initiatives
  • Drive design reviews and set engineering standards for reliability, correctness, and auditability
  • Partner with Legal, Privacy, Security, and product-engineering teams
  • Mentor engineers and act as a technical point of contact for governance concerns

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) building and operating backend distributed systems at scale, in a language like Go, Java, or similar
  • Track record of leading complex system design and cross-team technical initiatives
  • Strong fundamentals in data stores, consistency, and reliability
  • Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with non-engineering partners
  • Nice-to-have: prior experience with data privacy, governance, or compliance systems (e.g., GDPR/CCPA deletion, data-use/consent enforcement, cataloging/classification, or auditing)

Compensation

Salary: $207,600 – $273,600 USD per year, plus equity.

Benefits

Plaid provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
