About the Role
We're looking for experienced engineers to build and scale the database infrastructure that powers Claude's products and Anthropic's research. The Databases team spans core database platform, data movement, and caching. You'll architect and operate systems handling billions of API requests, build storage across GCP, AWS, and other deployment models, and set database strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive technical direction for database solutions
- Design and implement database solutions scaling to millions of users
- Build and scale database systems through 100x+ growth
- Architect data storage across GCP, AWS, first-party, third-party deployments
- Develop infrastructure for product and research workloads
- Build data movement infrastructure (migrations, backfill, CDC)
- Design and operate caching infrastructure
- Optimize performance, reliability, and cost
- Make build-vs-buy decisions
Minimum Qualifications
- Significant experience building and operating production database/storage systems
- Deep knowledge of distributed database architectures and OLTP systems
- Proficiency with SQL and at least one major relational/distributed database engine (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Spanner, CockroachDB, DynamoDB)
- Track record of leading large infrastructure projects
- Strong technical leadership and collaboration
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years building/scaling database systems, 3+ years leading projects
- Experience with Spanner, CockroachDB, TiDB, AlloyDB, or globally distributed SQL databases
- Experience with Redis, Temporal, vector databases, or async job processing
- Experience with change data capture (Debezium), large-scale migration, streaming
- Multi-cloud or hybrid cloud database solutions
- Database orchestration and automation
- Contributions to database internals or open source
Compensation
Annual salary: $320,000—$485,000 USD.
