About the job

About the Company

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, focused on creating reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The team includes researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working to build beneficial AI.

About the Role

As a Technical Program Manager for Research, you will define and build the programs research teams need, moving across areas like compute, evals, RL environments, and emerging research initiatives. This is a 0-to-1 role requiring deep technical understanding and the ability to create structure in unstructured research environments. The role may require responding to incidents on short notice, including weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Embed within research domains to understand technical landscapes, build trust with researchers, and identify high-leverage problems.
  • Move fluidly across research areas like compute, evals, RL environments, and emerging initiatives, ramping quickly.
  • Drive end-to-end execution of complex, ambiguous research initiatives spanning multiple teams.
  • Establish processes and frameworks that bring structure to unstructured research environments without slowing researchers.
  • Lead large-scale compute resource planning, including allocation, efficiency, and prioritization.
  • Drive eval readiness for model launches by standardizing results, shaping eval plans, and improving tooling.
  • Own execution and operational health of RL environments across major training runs.
  • Equip research leadership with clear, actionable recommendations on technical tradeoffs.
  • Act as connective tissue between research, engineering, and product teams.

Qualifications

  • Background in ML research or engineering with several years of experience building technical programs from scratch, ideally with hands-on exposure to training, evaluation, or large-scale distributed systems.
  • Fast learner able to ramp on unfamiliar technical domains quickly.
  • Resourceful, high-agency, and comfortable with ambiguity and shifting priorities.
  • Track record of operational ownership of complex technical systems, including monitoring, incident response, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to reason about technical tradeoffs across model architecture, training infrastructure, evals, or compute efficiency.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and ability to influence senior technical staff.
  • Comfortable with high-stakes environments impacting compute spend, model training timelines, and launch outcomes.

Compensation

Annual salary range: $365,000—$435,000 USD.

Benefits

Competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office space.
