About the job

Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems that are safe and beneficial for users and society. This posting is for the Economics & Policy workstream of the Anthropic Fellows Program, run by The Anthropic Institute.

Program overview

The Anthropic Fellows Program fosters AI research and engineering talent, providing funding and mentorship to promising technical talent regardless of previous experience. Fellows primarily use external infrastructure (e.g., open-source models, public APIs) to work on an empirical project aligned with Anthropic's research priorities, with the goal of producing a public output such as a paper submission. In one earlier cohort, over 80% of fellows produced papers.

What to expect

  • 4 months of full-time research
  • Direct mentorship from Anthropic researchers
  • Access to a shared workspace in Berkeley, California or London, UK
  • Connection to the broader AI safety and security research community
  • Weekly stipend of 3,850 USD / 2,310 GBP / 4,300 CAD plus benefits (vary by country)
  • Funding for compute (~$15k/month) and other research expenses

Research areas & mentors

Economics: Maxim Massenkoff, Peter McCrory. Policy, Security, and Society: Jack Clark, Marina Favaro, Jim Baker. Projects may include designing and conducting empirical research on AI's economic effects, developing new methodological approaches for studying AI's impact on labor markets and the future of work, analyzing the offense-defense balance for AI-enabled cyber and bio capabilities, identifying market-driven mechanisms for societal resilience, and identifying metrics for early warning signals of recursive self-improvement.

Qualifications

You may be a good fit if you are motivated by making AI safe and beneficial, excited to transition into empirical AI research, have a strong technical background in computer science, mathematics, or physics, thrive in fast-paced collaborative environments, and can implement ideas quickly and communicate clearly. Strong candidates may have a background in economics, social sciences, or cybersecurity, or experience in research or engineering related to the workstream. Candidates must be fluent in Python and available to work full-time on the program.

Logistics

Fellows must have work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada and be located in that country during the program. Remote fellows in the UK, US, or Canada are welcome; shared workspaces are available in London and Berkeley. Anthropic is not currently able to sponsor visas for fellows. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for the next cohort expected to start in January 2027; applications and interviews are managed by Constellation, Anthropic's recruiting partner.

Application

Apply using the provided application link. Note that the full-time role policies listed on the page (including the hybrid office policy and visa sponsorship) do NOT apply to the Fellows Program.
