Descript is building a simple, intuitive, fully-powered editing tool for video and audio, powered by AI. We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead our Agent team, focused on building the world’s best Agentic Video Editor, Underlord. You will manage a team of 5-6 software engineers, report to the VP of Engineering, and partner with engineering, product, design, and AI research teams. This role requires strong product thinking and strategic partnership skills.
Responsibilities
- Own execution: manage team priorities, drive alignment, adapt plans, and hold a high bar for delivery.
- Define team direction: connect customer needs, product vision, and technical realities with Product, Design, and AI Research.
- Develop your team: mentor and grow engineers, foster continuous learning, create stretch opportunities, deliver feedback, manage underperformance.
- Drive operational excellence: ensure predictable, reliable, sustainable execution with best practices.
- Maintain the technical bar: guide architectural decisions, address tech debt, drive high-quality systems.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years of engineering management.
- Strong technical background, effective communication, strategic thinking, adaptability, and high ownership.
- Extra credit: experience building agents, developing evals, or leading teams building LLM-powered products; experience with creative tools.
Compensation
Base salary range $222,431-$261,684/year.
