About the job
About Gusto
Gusto's mission is to grow the small business economy, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. Teams are in Denver, San Francisco, and New York. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs). AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto; all team members are expected to engage with AI tools relevant to their role.
About the Role
This role blends technical problem-solving with sales and customer service. After training, you'll help small business owners get their payroll and HR set up correctly, entering past information, catching setup mistakes, and guiding customers through state and federal tax guidelines across all 50 states. This team is where technical sales careers start at Gusto, building foundational payroll, tax, and compliance expertise while developing consultative sales skills. Reps who excel can grow into Implementations and Solutions Engineering roles.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Handle high-volume customer interactions across phone and email, guiding small business owners from onboarding to running their first payroll.
- Own your ticket queue like a seller owns their opportunity pipeline.
- Proactively position plan upgrades and surface cross-sell opportunities for Health Insurance, Workers' Comp, and 401(k).
- Catch tax discrepancies live, troubleshoot unfamiliar state portals, and make the right compliance call for each state, size, and industry combination.
- Configure sick time, PTO, and overtime policies to keep companies compliant from day one.
- Work across teams, knowing when to hand off to specialists and working with the Risk team to build trust.
- Use assigned AI tools daily, surfacing friction and giving feedback that shapes what gets built next.
What We're Looking For
- 1+ years in a high-volume sales or customer service role with cross-selling, upselling, or hitting a quota/KPIs. New grads are welcome to apply.
- Eager to learn a new industry, including tax codes, compliance rules, and payroll mechanics.
- Customer-obsessed, building trust through consultative conversations.
- Goal-oriented and competitive, wanting to hit numbers and level up sales game.
- Strong communication across phone, email, and chat.
- Adaptable problem solver who thrives on challenge.
- Proven, day-to-day experience integrating AI into work, including writing, research, prep, and summarization, with a track record of giving clear, useful feedback.
Compensation
Cash compensation is $23.00/hr to $24.50/hr in Denver, Phoenix & Atlanta. Final offers depend on location, experience, and expertise.
Location and Work Expectations
Gusto has physical offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in those locations (including the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas) are expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same expectations apply to Symmetry roles in Scottsdale. When approved to work from another location, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required, including non-office days for hybrid employees.
